More citizen security, an urgent challenge for Chile. By Juan Ignacio Duarte, CEO of WiseCity

The growing concern about crime in Chile is not unfounded. According to the 2023 Center for Public Studies survey, 60% of Chileans consider crime as their main concern. This alarming data reflects a reality that affects everyone's quality of life and forces us to look for effective and practical solutions to protect ourselves in our daily lives.

The first quarter of 2024 has shown a worrying increase in robbery rates in various regions of the country. A study by ALTO revealed that surprise robbery in the Metropolitan Region increased by 18.2% compared to the same period in 2023. Other regions have also seen significant increases: in Arica and Parinacota, thefts increased by 22.5% , and in Antofagasta, robbery with intimidation increased by 10.8%. These figures are just a sample of a trend that is repeated at the national level.

In this challenging scenario, it is crucial that we take precautionary measures to safeguard our personal safety. Staying alert and aware of your surroundings is essential. Paying attention to the people and vehicles around us, as well as poorly lit or lonely places, can help us anticipate possible threats and act preventively. Additionally, it is important to know high-risk areas and avoid them, especially at night or during non-busy times. Planning routes and trips along safer and busier roads can make a big difference.

Constant communication with family and friends is also vital. Keeping in touch with them, especially when leaving home or work, can be of great help in an emergency.

Sharing location in real time through mobile applications and establishing communication protocols can facilitate a rapid response to risk situations. Likewise, having basic knowledge of self-defense and personal safety techniques can be invaluable in dangerous situations. Attending specialized courses and having items such as whistles or alarm devices on hand can increase your chances of defending yourself against an attack.

However, the key to confronting this wave of crime is "never confront the criminal, but avoid him." Following recommendations such as not talking on the phone in public, not entering an ATM at night and not withdrawing large sums of money at the bank can significantly reduce the risk of being a victim of a crime.

In these times of insecurity, we must come together as a community to protect and support each other. Technological tools and individual preventive actions are essential to building a safer environment for everyone. It is our responsibility, both individually and collectively, to take proactive measures to address this challenge and ensure a safer future for Chile.
